Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How Long Will Paint Correction Last on My Tesla Model Y?

When properly cared for, the effects of a paint correction will easily last 5 years. And if you don't wait too long to touch it up, you may be able to avoid having to do a heavy correction in the future. If it's been corrected the first time, you can keep it in check by getting a light polish done every couple of years to ensure it doesn't get worse. This not only looks fantastic, but it also helps to preserve as much clearcoat as possible by preventing any heavy cutting or compounding.

What is Stage 1 Paint Correction?

Stage 1 Paint Correction is just what it sounds like: polishing the paintwork in one step with just one form of polish and pad combination. Step 1 includes refining the paint work with a finishing polish and a finishing pad only, which is usually not abrasive enough to remove swirl marks and scratches. It is then accompanied by a wax or paint sealant to preserve the paint work, which is suited to paint work in good condition with no real visible swirls and only very slight marring.

What is Stage 2 Paint Correction?

Stage 2 Paint Correction is for cars with mild swirl marks and light scratches, and it involves the use of two separate polish and pad combinations. The first step is typically a cutting (abrasive) polish, which eliminates imperfections including swirl marks, light scratches, and other moderate paint defects. This is followed by a finishing polish and finishing pad to refine the paintwork even further by removing any marring or holograms left over from the previous stage, and then a wax or paint sealant to protect the paintwork.

What is Stage 3 Paint Correction?

Step 3 Paint Correction is for cars with serious swirl marks, scratches, and other paint faults, and it requires the use of three different polish and pad combinations, as well as spot wet sanding for deeper scratches. The first step is to use a heavy cutting compound with a heavy cutting pad to remove deeper swirl marks and scratches; the second step is to use a cutting polish and polishing pad to remove further swirl marks; the third step is to use a finishing polish and finishing pad to further refine the paint work to a swirl, mar, and hologram free finish; and finally, a wax or paint sealant to protect the paint work.

What Exactly is Orange Peel?

Simply put, orange peel is a textured defect in the paint job. Since the paint is wavy in several ways and reflects light in various directions around the flaw, you can see it through your eyes (s). The surface will be bumpy, and the reflection will not be flawless. Panels that have been repainted always have orange peel on them. In certain instances, it can come directly from the manufacturer.

The orange peel effect can be caused by a variety of factors, according to Sherwin Williams. Premature evaporation of thinner, incorrect spray gun configuration (i.e. low air pressure or incorrect nozzle), spraying at an angle other than perpendicularly, or applying too much paint can all cause this. Human error is to blame 90% of the time. That explains why the orange peel effect is so popular on high-end, hand-painted automobiles.

Can Swirl Marks be Permanently Removed?

Swirl marks and small scratches can be removed in two ways: by removing the top layer of paint or by using a special swirl remover to fill in the microscopic scratches. However, if you want to get rid of them for good, you should go for the first choice. The reduced thickness of your clear coat should have no adverse effects if you protect your paint after buffing out the scratches, while constant and repeated buffing and polishing will eventually wear through to underlying layers.
